Huddersfield Town have clinched the season-long loan of Liverpool and Wales goalkeeper Danny Ward.

The 6ft 3in 23-year-old will take the vacant No1 shirt and join up with his new teammates for the two-match trip to Austria on July 23.

Ward, who was also a target of Celtic, is currently taking time out after Wales’ return from Euro 2016, where he played in the group game against Slovakia.

He will therefore miss the Shankly Trophy clash between Town and Liverpool on Wednesday, July 20.

Ward, who has agreed a new long-term contract at Liverpool, becomes Town head coach David Wagner’s 11th senior signing of the close-season.

And the boss said: “I’ve spoken before about using the loan market to bring special talent to the club.

“Danny is another great example of this, following closely on from Aaron Mooy’s arrival (from Manchester City).

“That is why there was such strong competition to take Danny.

“I would like to thank Liverpool for the help the staff at the club have given us in allowing Danny to join.

“He is a goalkeeper that Liverpool rate very highly, which is why he has signed a new long-term contract.

“He did very well out on loan (at Aberdeen) last season and I believe we can help him take the next step in his career, so he will return to Liverpool a better goalkeeper.

“Danny is good with the ball at his feet, which is important in our style, but most importantly he is excellent at keeping the ball out of his net!

“He has had a very busy season which was extended by the part he played for Wales in Euro 2016, so he will be given some time off before he joins our squad.”

Ward started his career at Wrexham, where he was originally signed by Town’s head of football operations Stuart Webber at 14.

He joined Liverpool in January 2012 and has also been loaned to Morecambe.

After returning to Anfield from Aberdeen, he made two first-team appearances for Liverpool and a Wales debut (against Northern Ireland) last season.

He won his third cap against Slovakia.
