TOWN are driving on to Cardiff - with backing from Direct Golf UK.

The Huddersfield company owned by John Andrew sponsored full sets of golf clubs for the squad during their weekend relaxing at Carden Park in Lancashire.

It was a follow-up to Direct Golf's backing of the Town Golf Day at Fixby last month when Andrew - formerly professional at Crosland Heath - played in the same group as McAlpine manager Peter Jackson.

As the players prepared for the Third Division play-off final at the Millennium Stadium, Andrew also presented them with Direct Golf polo shirts.

"Golf is a great way of relieving stress and pressure and enjoying yourself, so when Jacko told me he was taking the lads away before Cardiff, we couldn't think of anything better than to provide the equipment," said Andrew, whose company had a turnover of £20m this year and employs over 125 staff in six centres.

"We provided all the golfers with a full Wilson Power Chamber package of woods, irons, putter and bag and a Direct Golf UK cotton shirt as well.

"Although I'm a Leeds United fan myself, I do support Huddersfield Town having lived here for 15 years and having just celebrated our 10th anniversary in business.

"We are all behind Town for the final - I'm predicting a 3-0 win - and we hope they'll all be able to relax by using their new golf clubs this summer when they come back from Cardiff as promotion winners."

Andrew, who has 70 people working in his 75,000 sq ft Milnsbridge distribution centre for telesales, website sales and corporate business, also sponsors Leeds-based professional golfer Simon Hird.

"It is clear that Peter loves Huddersfield Town and the job he has done this season is fantastic," said Andrew.

"To have built things up from nothing in just eight months is an incredible achievement and if Town win promotion, he deserves it."

Already a winner is midfield player Tony Carss.

He won the in-house competition which the players organised at Carden Park, while defender Efe Sodje finished runner-up.
