There's no club versus country row for Huddersfield Town’s Northern Ireland striker Martin Paterson as he prepares to return to Burnley today.

The 21-times capped striker will once again wear his ‘international’ boots as he aims to score for the third game running.

Family man Paterson had been turning out in blue, but eager for a change of fortune, turned to his fluorescent Adidas Predator footwear against Derby on Boxing Day.

They are extra special, because as well as the Northern Ireland flag, they are adorned with the initials of his three sons, Kayden (age five), Cameron (four) and Kyran (two).

He duly claimed Town’s equaliser in a hard-fought draw, and scored again in Sunday’s 5-1 crushing of Yeovil at the John Smith’s.

The close-season capture’s first strike for his fourth club (after home-city Stoke, Scunthorpe and Burnley) came in November’s 2-1 win at Sheffield Wednesday.

Now the 26-year-old is after another away goal at a ground where he spent five years, and played Premier League football.

“I can assure every Town supporter that nobody has been more frustrated by the lack of goals than myself,” said Paterson, who scored 37 times for Burnley.

“But I’ve been working hard on the training ground and in the gym, and then out on the pitch, and thankfully it’s paying off.

“Sometimes you just need the right ball to drop for you, and because I was looking for a change of luck, I thought I’d try a change of boots.

“I’ve got too many kids to have their names stitched on, but it’s great to have their initials K, C, K, and I’ll keep wearing them.

“Now I’ve got those goals under my belt, I believe I can carry on and get more, and I also believe we can push on as a team.”

At the halfway point of the season, Town are 11th on 31 points, four behind the Championship play-off zone.

The visit to third-placed Burnley is followed by Saturday’s FA Cup third-round tie at Grimsby, where Paterson spent three months on loan from Stoke in 2006-07.

And the Potteries-based frontman believes there is plenty to play for, adding: “We’ve produced three good performances and we’re keen to kick on.

We got good points at Brighton and at home to Derby, a game we possibly should have won, then we played really well against Yeovil.

“Now we’re ready for another tough run of games, starting at Turf Moor, and all the lads are really enjoying their football at the minute.”

Nottinghamshire’s David Coote will take charge of today’s game.

It’s his 19th of the season, and his second at Turf Moor after Burnley’s clash with Charlton.

Hampshire’s Keith Stroud will referee the Grimsby game, his second in the competition this season after Wolves versus Oldham.
