FIRSTLY, on behalf of all Town fans, I have to pay tribute to the tremendous efforts of Ken Davy, Peter Jackson, Terry Yorath and all the players for a brilliant season considering the turmoil we were in last year.
From relegation and administration to the brink of automatic promotion shows a fantastic effort by all.
And so to a glorious Saturday in May with 17,000 Town fans in the stadium ready to celebrate automatic promotion should Torquay slip up. Unfortunately Mansfield had not read the script.
Town started brightly, passing the ball well and looking as if they were going to rise to the occasion and on 14 minutes got a deserved goal, sending the crowd wild with increasing anticipation. However, if ever a single goal changed the course of a game this was it.
Afterwards Town lost all cohesion as Mansfield, playing five across the middle, took control in that area. Worthington and Carss never got room.
The goal seemed to slow Town down a yard; Mansfield were suddenly first to every ball as they turned the screw.
Town, especially the keeper, stood and watched them equalise from a free header. David Mirfin, who was outstanding in defence, made one mistake and we were behind.
In the second half Boothy had a great header saved and Iffy just failed to connect with the goal at his mercy. Jacko went all out on attack but Mansfield hit us on the break.
So I and my daughters will go to Cheltenham still believing in the dream that would be a great achievement. The players, I am sure, will bounce back to reward the fans . Keep the faith. We're almost there.
Top Town player: Mirfin.
