ADAM CLAYTON saluted the quality of Huddersfield Town’s forward line after they finally got a win to their name following a 10-match winless run.

Jermaine Beckford scored the only goal of the game while partner James Vaughan had another chalked off for offside as they disposed of Charlton at The Valley in the FA Cup third round on Saturday.

Clayton, who played in central midfield and supplied the delivery for the winner, said: “If the ball is right for Jermaine, it’s a goal, and it’s the same with James Vaughan. They’re Premier League strikers.

“I believe Jermaine has scored 16 goals in 19 FA Cup games. I don’t think anyone else has a record like that.

“So to have someone with that ability is great. He’s so sharp, and his movement, like Vaughany’s, is brilliant.

“If you can get the ball into them with quality, which we will start doing again, we’ll score some goals.”

Town had reached their lowest point with a 6-1 thrashing at Leicester on New Year’s Day.

Clayton said it was crucial to hit back against Championship rivals Charlton.

“I don’t think were too bothered about the performance,” he said.

“We have won a game and now I think the shackles will come off the boys a bit and we’ll start playing how we played at the start of the season, so I think that win was vital.

“We had a plan to come here and have a bit more passion, enthusiasm and a bit more about us, as well as that desire to win the match.

“Those were the phrases used before the game and I think we did that.

“We dug in after we got the goal early doors and from then on in I don’t think Charlton really pushed us.

“I think we controlled big parts of the game so it’s a good performance and, at the end of the day it’s a win so we know that we can win games again.”

Clayton added: “After the Leicester game I was feeling particularly down. I don’t like losing, let alone 6-1, against players that I’ve grown up playing alongside – Danny Drinkwater and lads like that.

“The manner of the defeat upset me a bit but we’re back now, we’ve won a game and that’s all you can do coming to a tough place like Charlton.

“We’ve battled against a team who pride themselves on battling qualities so we’ve come here and got a win.

“Now we can move on with renewed confidence.”
