David Wagner picked up a special delivery today – a bagful of ‘well done’ messages from Huddersfield Town fans.

Supporters were generally delighted with the 5-0 victory over relegation-threatened Charlton Athletic at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Not just the fact it moved Town up to 16th on the back of five different goalscorers – Mark Hudson, Nahki Wells (who now has 10), Jamie Paterson, substitute Duane Holmes (his first at senior level) and Jason Davidson – but the quality of the team performance.

There’s only one worry now for some – can Town keep hold of their coach?

Bill, from Birkby, explained: “It was pleasing to see opposing fans applauding the final goal in recognition of being outclassed.

“Charlton are going down, I’m afraid, whereas Town, playing this system, can only go up.

“I’m reminded of the Neil Warnock era: we didn’t have the best set of players back then, and we don’t now, but both managers have systems that work.

“Clever management is the only way Town will ever get the dream promotion, because they can’t afford to buy it.

“The only worry is that another club will come in for the manager himself.”

SPH of Almondbury echoed the chant “he’s better than Klopp” while describing Town as brilliant, while Danny, of Outlane, added: “Battering a team when not at your best can only be good sign for the future.

“Town’s midfield were top drawer. The management seem to be able to play a different 11 every game and still improve. Unbelievable but fantastic.”

There was advice from Big Dan, based in Birkby.

“We need a striker were the calls on social media, well think again, maybe we don’t after all five goals were from different scorers.

“Great all-round team performance and if only the season started when Wagner was appointed, we’d be third in league.

“His style and stamp is definitely showing the signs, and he’s getting the best out of what we’ve got. Paterson for me was MOM

“In Wagner we trust! Terrier for life.”

Leigh-based fan Glenn encouraged absent fans to go and watch the team, adding: “Wagner making average players a lot better.”

And Roger, from Kirkburton, beamed: “Simply outstanding, can’t believe the transformation made under David Wagner, he is maybe truly better than Klopp!”

Alan Hague, on the Examiner’s Huddersfield Town Facebook page, reckoned Wagnermania is taking over, while Mick Carter added it was an awesome performance, and Wayne Parr asked: “Could David Wagner be the man that is able to get Huddersfield Town a play-off or promotion spot?”

Tony, from Salendine Nook, concurred: “I said it last week and I will say it again – play-offs”

Chief, of Shelley, said it was a comprehensive win against an ‘awful’ Charlton side.

“Great team performance with Hogg and Paterson influential,” he said.

“Hudson displaying some consistency now, and even Davidson showing some form.

“Nice unbeaten run, let’s keep it going!”

John, from Holmfirth, hailed a ‘fantastic 14-man performance’ while Chris Green, of Dalton, summed it all up.

“Herr Wagner, I take my hat off to you and the rest of your coaching team.

“You have thoroughly transmuted the way the squad are playing their football.

“Being a Town follower has never been so enjoyable, and the results are reflecting the impact you’ve made in the short time you’ve been here. The future looks bright as we are going to prosper under you.

“Me and the rest of the Terriers’ fanbase can’t thank you enough for coming over to England to lead us.

“Your management skills are of the highest quality, and you live up to the title of the ‘Special One’. Oh, and may I just remind people that you are better than Klopp!”
