With the chance to move above Leeds United in the table, an opportunity to ensure their hosts finish as the worst-ever second-tier side and a possible highest finish in 15 years on the cards, a final-day clash at Blackpool is no dead rubber for Huddersfield Town and their fans.

And the travelling Terriers supporters will also hope to preserve an impressive record on the final day having won five, drawn four and lost just one of their last 10 final-day encounters.

It has hardly mattered what sort of campaign Town have experienced, they have seldom finished a season on a sour note since the rebranding of the Football League in 2004 - the club's first season back in the third tier.

Eight years in League One yielded a collective 15 points from a possible 24 and they have continued that trend since gaining promotion to the Championship in 2012, with a draw and a win from their two respective final-day affairs so far.

The majority were dead rubbers, but Town managed to hold their nerve on the final day just two seasons ago to secure survival alongside Yorkshire neighbours Barnsley in a tense face-off.

Already-relegated Pool have nothing to play for this weekend - too far behind Wigan Athletic above them and with no-one below them to stay ahead of after a truly wretched season.

So sealing a sixth win from 11 for Town this weekend would be just the tonic ahead of the close season.

Take a look through our gallery of last season's final-day fixture here...

2004/2005 - Wrexham 0-1 Town

Similarly to this weekend, the Terriers travelled to an already-relegated outfit for their final fixture but there was something riding on this one, with play-off hopes alive, albeit slender at best.

David Mirfin struck a 43rd-minute winner at The Racecourse Ground as he nodded home an Adnan Ahmed corner with top scorer that season Pawel Abbott hitting a post after the interval as Town just missed out on a place in the top six behind Sheffield Wednesday and Hartlepool United.

2005/2006 - Swindon Town 0-0 Town

Town sealed fourth spot - and a play-off semi final clash with Barnsley - with the final-day point at Swindon, as the Robins were relegated to the fourth tier of English football with 48 points, four worse off than Rotherham United.

But Town, who had won just one of their final six games heading into the play-offs, were stung by fifth-placed Barnsley as the Tykes prevailed with a 3-2 aggregate win over the Terriers.

2006/2007 - Town 3-1 Leyton Orient

A return to winning ways for Town but this was the very epitome of a dead rubber, with Andy Ritchie's side comfortably nestled in mid-table and Orient having already done enough to secure survival.

Not that it stopped Town from notching a second win in three as goals from Michael Collins and Andy Holdsworth (2) capped the perfect end to the season for the Terriers, despite a second-half Jason Demetriou consolation.

2007/2008 - Luton Town 0-1 Town

Another year and another win for Town despite having precious little to play for once more, with progression shown by moving from 2006/2007's final position of 15th up to 10th, sealed with a last-day success at Kenilworth Road.

The Hatters had been deducted 10 points and finished bottom of the pile with 33 points in the end, with their misery complete when Phil Jevons powered home a header from Joe Skarz' cross as Town finished the season with a six-game unbeaten run under caretaker boss Gerry Murphy.

2008/2009 - Leyton Orient 1-1 Town

The second time in three seasons that these two sides came face-to-face in the final programme of matches and this was another match which mattered little to the Terriers, but they were still able to avoid defeat from their latest finale.

It was an occasion which had most significance for Andy Booth ending his career with his 150th and last goal for the club when he beat goalkeeper Jamie Jones to the ball before slotting home, but the O's mustered a leveller through Dean Morgan to deny Booth the perfect send-off.

2009/2010 - Exeter City 2-1 Huddersfield

They say all good things must come to an end and this was no different, as Exeter sealed League One survival at the expense of Gillingham with a late win over the Terriers.

Gary Roberts had got Town off to a flyer as they looked to extend their impressive run on the final matchday when he turned and slotted home after just two minutes, but Matt Taylor and Ryan Harley netted the goals the Grecians needed to stay up.

Who said the last game of the season doesn't matter? Town may have already been assured of third spot having narrowly been pipped by Southampton to promotion to the Championship, but Town made sure they continued their astonishing unbeaten run with a point against the mid-table Bees.

Danny Ward netted a quickfire brace to put Town in the ascendancy, only for Jeffrey Schlupp to hit back with two goals either side of half-time.

Lee Novak got Town back in front once more, before Lewis Grabban struck either side of a Benik Afobe goal to leave the scores level in an absorbing clash as Lee Clark's men made it 25 games on the spin without defeat.

2011/2012 - Town 2-0 Yeovil Town

After the play-off final heartache of the year before, Town entered their latest push for promotion with a three-game unbeaten run to finish the season, capped off with a 2-0 success over the Glovers.

It also secured fourth spot above MK Dons, who lost 1-0 at home to Walsall on the day and ensure Town would have home advantage in the second leg of the play-off semi after goals from Lee Novak and Ward.

2012/2013 - Town 2-2 Barnsley

Arguably the most important last-day game from Town's recent history, as they clung on to their Championship status in the very final throes of the season thanks to a late James Vaughan leveller in a winner-takes-all style shootout between the two Yorkshire sides.

Town's predicament was not quite as precarious as the Tykes, for whom three points may still have not been enough but a point ultimately proved enough as Peterborough United fell to a 3-2 defeat at Crystal Palace.

Chris O'Grady has put the visitors in front early on but Jermaine Beckford hauled Town level early in the second half, only for Jason Scotland to put a massive dent into Town's survival hopes.

The yo-yo game concluded with Vaughan threatening to relegate Barnsley with an 82nd-minute equaliser, until the final twist from Selhurst Park.

2013/2014 - Watford 1-4 Town

Last season was Town's most emphatic final-day success since 2 May 1992 (a 4-0 home win over Torquay United) as the Terriers ran riot at Vicarage Road, thanks to a hat-trick from Ward.

Joe Lolley got the ball rolling with his first goal for the club on his full debut just after half-time before Ward took centre stage with a 32-minute treble, rendering Troy Deeney's last-minute equaliser meaningless.
