Jon Stead scored against his former club – but it wasn’t enough to prevent Huddersfield Town suffering a first defeat of the Professional Development League campaign at Sheffield United.

A second-half penalty sealed a 2-1 win for the Blades over the new II North champions.

Jake Eyre gave United Under 21s an early lead before Stead, a Blade between 2007-09 and an overage player alongside Anton Robinson for Town, levelled after 19 minutes.

Former United loan player Harry Bunn missed a great chance to put Town ahead early in the second half.

And the home side sealed victory when Elliott Whitehouse scored from a 66th-minute penalty conceded by Jordan Sinnott.

Joe Lolley, fit again after the shin injury which kept him out of Saturday’s first-team squad to face Blackburn, started for Town.

So too did Norwegian midfielder Sondre Tronstad.

Steve Eyre’s side had won their previous 13 matches after a draw in the opening game at home to Nottingham Forest.

They have three more league games to go, against Birmingham at PPG Canalside on Monday, March 31, away to Derby on Wednesday, April 9 and against Coventry at the John Smith’s Stadium on Monday, April 14.

Town will then take part in the play-offs against the second-placed Southern section side.
