Five people have been arrested by police following an investigation into the pitch invasion which saw Huddersfield Town's final match of the 2014/15 season abandoned at Blackpool .

The last-day clash at Bloomfield Road, which was ultimately ruled as a 0-0 draw by the Football League , was called off by referee Mick Russell after 47 minutes as the Championship campaign concluded with home fans pouring onto the pitch in protest at controversial owner Karl Oyston.

Around 150 Pool supporters were involved in the protest, with police indicating that a minority were deemed to have "overstepped the mark,” having studied CCTV footage of events.

Five men ranging from ages 24 to 46 have been arrested and police are waiting to speak to two more suspects, with their investigation into the abandonment an ongoing one.

“Today’s arrests come as part of our on-going investigation into the events that occurred at the fixture back in May”, said Det Insp Jason Richardson, of Blackpool Police.

“I would like to once again reiterate our thanks to supporters from both teams for their restraint, support and cooperation on the day of the match which ensured that everyone was able to leave the ground safely.

“While the majority of supporters behaved responsibly and peacefully, our investigation is focused on the small number of people whose conduct overstepped the mark.

“There is no place for such conduct at any sporting fixtures and we are continuing with our enquiries to ensure that those who we believe behaved in an unacceptable manner are brought to account for their actions.”

Blackpool, who were charged with failing to fulfil a fixture, remain subject to investigation from both the Football League and the FA with a ruling expected in the next fortnight on possible compensation for Town fans .
