1. James Vaughan is his own worst enemy
It’s been a difficult season for the striker, who has once again been hit by injuries and looked set to leave for Wigan Athletic during the transfer window after being told a contract which runs out at the end of the season won’t be renewed.
But it’s not about to get any easier after his return to the first-team scene as a 73rd-minute substitute was ended by a needless straight red card in stoppage time.
Vaughan might have been facing MK Dons from the off. Now the only thing he’ll be starting is a likely three-match ban.
2. It’s good to have Mark Hudson back
The captain is an influential man both on and off the field.
He figured for the first time in six games after an ankle injury and played a prominent role in a first clean sheet of the campaign.
And given Elliott Ward’s knee injury, his return is especially timely.
3. Town have to make better use of the chances they are creating
This was the third match in succession too many opportunities have been passed up.
Chris Powell’s side might have been well beaten at Molineux, but they could have gone ahead before Wolves’ opener, and they could easily have beaten, rather than drawn with, both Nottingham Forest and Ipswich Town.
4. Powell needs more from out wide
Just as against Wolves, Town toiled to produce from the flanks.
A couple of first-half runs by Sean Scannell started off very promisingly, but came to nothing, and his replacement Mustapha Carayol couldn’t make much of an impression.
5. Jed Steer had been a worthwhile addition
The keeper started his second month on loan from Aston Villa in exactly the right fashion.
He was agile, decisive and safe throughout, with his late denial of David McGoldrick the highlight of a bright display which followed the signing of a new Villa contract through to 2019.
