Chris Powell is the new manager of Huddersfield Town.

The 44-year-old former Charlton Athletic team chief has been appointed the club’s fourth permanent manager in six years on a rolling contract after chairman Dean Hoyle and the board carried out extensive interviews.

Powell, who succeeds Mark Robins who left by mutual consent on August 10, will take charge of his first match at the John Smith’s Stadium when Town play host to Middlesbrough a week on Saturday, September 13.

The five-cap former England international left-back takes over the reins from stand-in boss Mark Lillis, who returns to his duties as Academy Manager after leading the side to two wins, a draw and three defeats in all comptitions in his third caretaker spell.

He will be joined at Town by Alex Dyer, who will work in an Assistant Manager capacity alongside existing right-hand man Steve Thompson after previously holding the same title under Powell at Charlton.

Steve Eyre will remain as First Team Coach and Nick Colgan as Head of Goalkeeping while the rest of the current technical staff will remain in place.

Town Chairman Dean Hoyle told the club website: “We’re delighted to be able to welcome Chris to Huddersfield Town as the new Manager.

“We’ve taken our time over this appointment, as we wanted to give ourselves time to put in the groundwork and ensure we get the right man for the job. We believe we have in Chris.

“As I said when the process began, I felt it was important that we found a Manager who had ‘done it’ and Chris certainly fits that bill. He has ‘done it’ by guiding Charlton to promotion to the Championship and then finishing ninth in the 2012/13 Championship season – all achieved on a limited budget by getting the best out of his players.

“Chris also has an excellent pedigree of developing young players, with the likes of Carl Jenkinson, Diego Poyet, Callum Harriott and Jordan Cousins emerging in Charlton’s First Team under his guidance. That is an important factor in our vision for the Club.

“As a player, a Coach and a Manager, Chris knows what it takes to succeed at Championship level. Alongside his experience with Charlton, he was also promoted out of this division three times during his playing career and has become accustomed to winning.

“We’ve met Chris to discuss the job in two long meetings and both times he has impressed us with his enthusiasm, passion and knowledge of Huddersfield Town and the Championship. He is personally highly motivated and we feel he will get the best from the players. His record demands respect and we think he is the ideal man to take this Club forward.

“Make no mistake – throughout the football industry, Chris is held in extremely high regard. This is an excellent fit with the Club and how we operate.”

Powell, who missed the World Cup in Brazil to complete the UEFA Pro Licence and this summer helped coach the England Under 17s in preparation for the European Championships which they won, was sacked by Charlton back in March.

He led The Valley club to the League I title with a record 101 points in 2011-12, but eventually left the club following a number of disagreements with the club’s owner, Roland Duchatelet.

Powell, who has just had his first free pre-season since 1986, was a 1/10 favourite with bookmakers when the market was suspended.
