Peter Clarke put the ball in the back of the net for the first time since Huddersfield Town’s League I play-off final penalty shoot-out win over Sheffield United – then insisted Blackpool can yet avoid relegation from the Championship.

Town’s former skipper Clarke and ex-manager Lee Clark have joined forces at Bloomfield Road, where basement side Pool beat Millwall 1-0 on Saturday.

They are eight points away from safety, but Clarke, who signed up for a second Pool spell in the summer, says Clark, appointed on October 30, can save the day.

“There is life left in the club, and being written off is a motivating factor. We believe we can get out of the situation we are in,” said the centre-back, who scored one of Town’s penalties against the Blades at Wembley and has scored 41 goals overall.

“We have virtually half a season of football left, and that leaves a lot of points to play for.”

The Seasiders will chase their fourth win of the campaign at Wolves on Saturday.
