AS TWO of his former clubs clash in as key League I game today, Matt Glennon has promotion thoughts of his own.

The former Town and Carlisle keeper has signed a short-term deal with Evo-Stik (Northern Premier) League leaders Chester, who host Whitby Town.

And the 33-year-old is eager to use his experience to help bring Blue Square (Conference) action to a city which once had a Football League club.

“I’ve played more than 450 games, so I know what it’s about,” said Glennon who made 122 appearances for Town between 2006 and 2010.

“I should be nice and calm when the pressure is on, and I’m here to help Chester win the league.”

Having joined Bradford after his departure from Town during the 2010 January transfer window, Glennon had been with hometown Stockport since the following August.

He departed Edgeley Park after falling out of favour with manager Jim Gannon and had been training with Hull, where he spent a season in the early nineties.

Chester manager Neil Young moved for Glennon, who has also had spells at Bolton, Falkirk and St Johnstone, after an injury to previous stopper John Danby.

And the man who helped Carlisle win promotion from the Conference back to the Football League in 2005 added: “I’m enjoying my football.

“I want to be at a club who want to succeed, but I also want to play with a smile on my face, and I hope my teammates will do the same.”

Chester were formed in 2010 after the winding up of the former Football League club, winning promotion from the Evo-Stik First Division North last season following a successful appeal to the Football Association over their initial placement in the successful appeal to the FA against their initial placement in the North West Counties League.
