Gary Naysmith aims to complete a crash course in management by keeping East Fife in Scotland’s League I.

The former Town defender, 35, became boss of the Methil club in December after joining them as a player at the start of the season.

It’s been a tough baptism, and a second-bottom finish plunged them into the play-offs.

The Scottish play-off system combines divisions, and Naysmith’s side beat Clyde, who finished fourth in League II, in the semis.

That set up a final showdown with Stirling (third in League II), with East Fife coming from behind to win Wednesday’s first leg 2-1.

The decisive second leg is at Bayview on Sunday.

And former Scotland international and Hearts, Everton, Sheffield United and Aberdeen star Naysmith, who made 45 Town appearances between 2010-12, said: “After 60 minutes I thought we began to look a bit tired so I put the subs on.

“From there I thought there was only one team that was going to win it.

“But we’ll need to be wary of Stirling on Sunday because they’ll come right at us thinking that they have nothing to lose.”

Town also have a connection with Scotland’s Championship play-off final.

Former midfielder Lee Makel is assistant to manager Jimmy Nicholl, the former Manchester United star, Cowdenbeath, who drew 1-1 win Dunfermline in Wednesday’s final first leg at Central Park.

The neighbourly contest reconvenes on Sunday at East End Park, where Town played Dunfermline, who finished runners-up to Rangers in League I this season, in a friendly in 2011.

Cowdenbeath, known as the Blue Brazil and second-bottom of the Championship, were originally due to have home advantage in the second leg, but their ground had already been booked for stock car racing!

Makel, 41, made 79 Town appearances between 1995-98, having been signed for £300,000 from Blackburn.

He came through the ranks at Newcastle and also turned out for Hearts, Bradford, Livingston, Plymouth, Dunfermline, Swedish side Ostersunds and East Fife before finishing his playing career at Cowdenbeath.

He joined the coaching staff in 2012.

Falkirk, former club of Town director of football operations Ross Wilson as well as defender Murray Wallace, are all square with Hamilton going into Sunday’s Premiership semi-final second leg at New Douglas Park, the other venue on Town’s two-match Scottish trip of 2011.

The pair, who drew 1-1 at Falkirk on Tuesday, are battling it out to face Hibs in a two-legged final.

Hibs finished second-bottom of the Premiership and if relegated, will play alongside Edinburgh rivals Hearts and Rangers in the Championship next season.
