Former Huddersfield Town loanee Diego Poyet is set to turn out at the Under-20 World Cup, which starts this weekend.

West Ham United midfielder Poyet, who spent a month on loan with Town in November, will represent Uruguay in New Zealand, where the tournament is being held.

The 20-year-old pledged his allegiance to La Celeste earlier this year despite being eligible for England having represented them at Under-16 and Under-17 level and withdrew from the Under-20s squad for a match with Romania in September last year.

Poyet signed for Town at the start of November and was part of the first-team squad which lost 3-1 at Fulham prior to the second international break of the season before a 90-minute cameo against Sheffield Wednesday in a 0-0 draw and 76 minutes in the 1-0 loss at Bolton Wanderers.

But he was unable to make enough of an impression on boss Chris Powell, who handed the player his first-team debut when the pair were at Charlton Athletic, and subsequently returned to Upton Park following the expiry of his one-month loan.

"It was tough because I have lived in England for 16 years," he was quoted as saying recently. "But I had to choose and, in my heart and with my family, it was Uruguay."

Poyet's dad Gus, who was sacked as Sunderland manager last season, made 26 appearances for Uruguay between 1993 and 2000.

Uruguay face Serbia in their first match on Sunday, before facing Mexico on June 2 and Mali in their final group stage game on June 6 and will be looking to go one better this time after finishing as runners-up at the 2013 tournament.

West London duo Fulham and Brentford, along with Ipswich Town, are the only Championship clubs with representatives in the competition, with Serbian Nikola Tzanev for the Bees, New Zealander Monty Patterson for Ipswich and American Emerson Hyndman and Argentine Tiago Casasola for the Cottagers.
