Former Huddersfield Town manager Mark Robins has been named the new boss of Scunthorpe United.

The 44-year-old left Town in the wake of the 4-0 opening-day home defeat by AFC Bournemouth in August.

The League I strugglers sacked Russ Wilcox and his assistant John Schofield last week.

Robins’ first match in charge will be against Colchester United at Glanford Park on Saturday.

The former Manchester United striker, who has signed a three-year contract, inherits a side second -bottom of the table.

Robins, who took Town to Scunthorpe in pre-season, watched Saturday’s 3-0 win at Gillingham.

“First and foremost I am delighted to be here. I was very encouraged by what I saw,” he said.

“The opportunity was too good to turn down because there are exciting times coming here.

“I want everyone to enjoy what we are doing and excite the supporters.

“You have to work hard and have the players buy in to what you are doing.”

Robins added: “To gain a job, someone has to lose a job and Russ did a fantastic job last season and has brought in some great players.

“It’s exciting times for the club. Injuries have caused problems, so we have to get those players back.

“Every job is a different challenge. But saying that, it’s the same challenge, we have to start picking points up.

“There are reasons to be optimistic within the squad but obviously there are areas to be worked on. That will be an ongoing thing.

“There are no panic stations yet. We’ve got a lot of games left and we will put in a plan to not only get out of this but play exciting football.”

Robins managed Rotherham United, Barnsley and Coventry City before joining Town in February 2013.

He plans to bring an assistant to Scunthorpe, but no names have been revealed.
