Popular former Huddersfield Town skipper Peter Clarke has made a first appearance for his new club Oldham Athletic.

The 34-year-old centre-back – Town’s promotion-winning play-off skipper at Wembley in 2012 – has penned a one-year contract with the Latics after being Player of the Season at Bury.

He was part of the side beaten 3-1 by Preston, with former Town loan player Joe Garner grabbing a double alongside a strike from Eoin Doyle.

Also in the Oldham side was another player with Huddersfield football in his blood, former Emley midfielder Ollie Banks (son of Ian), who has joined Oldham on a two-year contract after being released by Chesterfield.

Banks, 23, is new manager Steve Robinson’s 12th summer signing and will wear the No8 shirt, while Clarke has taken No26.

Doyle scored after 19 minutes at Boundary Park, side-footing past Connor Ripley.

Robinson made four changes at half-time and after a powerful header from Garner doubled the lead for the Lilywhites, a quick-footed trialist winger smashed home two minutes later after exchanging passes from a short corner.

Preston’s third came only two minutes after that, as Garner struck home a 74th-minute penalty awarded for a shirt-pull in the penalty area.
