Former Huddersfield Town player Jimmy McGill has died aged 68.

The tough-tackling Glaswegian midfielder was a popular member of the 1969-70 Second Division title-winning team.

He went on to play top-flight football for the club, making 184 appearances in all and scoring eight goals.

Signed from Arsenal for £10,000 in September 1967, McGill left Town for Hull City in a £55,000 deal in October 1971.

He skippered Hull before signing for Halifax Town in February 1976.

There were also spells in Australia (at Melbourne club George Cross) and the USA (San Diego Jaws) before he ended his playing days at Frickley Athletic.

McGill later worked as a welder, a trade he had learned before signing for Arsenal in July 1965.

His debut for the Gunners came against Leeds United in May, 1966.

But opportunities were limited by the presence of fellow Scot Frank McLintock, and he played just 12 times in total.

He was a regular at Town, however, first under Tom Johnston, then Ian Greaves, the manager who built the well-remembered 1969-70 side.

McGill was one of seven ever-presents alongside keeper Terry Poole, Dennis Clarke, Geoff Hutt, Jimmy Nicholson, Roy Ellam and Frank Worthington.

His role was to help break up opposition attacks and help set up opportunities for Colin Dobson and Worthington, Town’s top scorer with 18 league goals.

McGill missed just one First Division game the season after, helping Town beat his old club Arsenal 2-1 at Leeds Road.

McGill’s death was marked by fans paying tribute via social media.

On the downatthemacwebsite, fans passed on their condolences.
