Former Huddersfield Town striker Danny Cadamarteri has announced his retirement.

The 34-year-old, who had two spells at the John Smith’s and is now at Carlisle, has been unable to beat a long-term knee injury.

The Heavy Woollen-based frontman, who has been coaching the Leeds United women’s team, is near the end of a two-year contract at Brunton Park.

Carlisle, who signed Cadamarteri after the end of his second Town stint, from January 2011 until June 2012, say his decision was taken on medical advice.

The Everton product, whose first spell at Town was from June 2007 to June 2009, has not been able to play for Carlisle this season, while he made 28 outings, scoring twice, last time around.

He has also played for Bradford (twice), Leeds, Sheffield United, Leicester and Dundee United, and has totalled 399 games at club level, with 42 goals.

Carlisle manager Graham Kavanagh said: “We have had an idea was coming our way for a while.

“We’ve looked for opinions and second opinions on his injury, because we all wanted to give him every chance of getting his knee right. Unfortunately we haven’t been able to do that.”
