Huddersfield Town are taking a look at free agents Leon Best and Stephen Kelly.

Chris Powell had former Newcastle United frontman Shola Ameobi working with his senior squad at PPG Canalside before the 33-year-old went on trial to fellow Championship side Wolves, who it appears will not be offering him terms.

Now, Powell has brought in 29-year-old striker Best and 32-year-old Republic of Ireland right-back Kelly with a view to assessing if they might be added to a squad already including five loan players in Emyr Hughes (Wigan Athletic), Mustapha Carayol (Middlesbrough), Elliott Ward (Bournemouth), Jamie Paterson (Nottingham Forest) and Jed Steer (Aston Villa).

“Leon and Stephen are free agents and they are just training with us,” said Powell ahead of the clash with Nottingham Forest for which Paterson is not eligible against his parent club.

“There are quite a few free agents around, which shows how the market is, and the two of them have had one day of training with us so far.

“There is nothing imminent and nothing more to say at this stage, they are just here and training with us.”

Best, who was last with Blackburn Rovers but has more recently had loan spells with Sheffield Wednesday, Derby County and Brighton, was a trainee at Southampton before moving on to Coventry and Newcastle, following loans to QPR, Sheffield Wednesday (the first time), Bournemouth and Yeovil.

He played seven times for the Republic of Ireland, where he was a teammate of former Reading right-back Kelly (38 caps).

Kelly, from Dublin, started out at Tottenham Hotspur before loans to Southend, QPR, Watford and a move to Birmingham City (2006-09).

He had a loan to Stoke City before signing for Fulham – where he spent four years – and then Reading, who offered him a new contract before he moved on.
