He was the first signing of the summer transfer window ahead of the 2014/2015 season, as Mark Robins plotted a way for Huddersfield Town to progress once more in their third season back in the second tier.

Robins turned to one of his trusted allies from his time at Coventry City as he looked to find a goalkeeper who could give Alex Smithies competition for the No.1 jersey, but the departure of Town's former boss after just one game was an inauspicious beginning for Murphy.

And he has hardly had a look-in since, with just two league outings as part of four appearances in total for the Terriers - so should Town keep Smithies' back-up this summer?

There are suggestions that Town may look to cash in on the experienced shot-stopper to help fund moves elsewhere in the squad.

With Chris Powell looking to finally put his stamp on the Town squad during the summer months, should the 33-year-old be let go?

Doug Thomson and Tom Marshall-Bailey discuss.

Doug Thomson - Yes, keep him

Does it really make sense for Town to let Murphy go?

There's no doubt Smithies is the main man between the posts for Powell.

But in the 33-year-old former Coventry player, he has an experienced and ready-made replacement.

Smithies has played the bulk of the games since Town returned to the Championship in 2012.

But there is always the chance of injury, or suspension, leaving the 25-year-old on the sidelines.

Lloyd Allinson, currently third in line, is untried at first-team level and would benefit from being loaned out.

Were Town to let Murphy leave, they would have to bring in a replacement.

And with funds limited, there are other areas of the side demanding attention.

Tom Marshall-Bailey - No, Town need more

Smithies has rarely looked in any real threat that he may be about to lose his status as No.1 goalkeeper this season.

And though Murphy has probably not been afforded ample opportunity to prove his worth, that is surely a reflection on a lack of competition.

The current incumbent of the goalkeeping jersey has mirrored his side's form this season with some outstanding displays coupled with the sort of individual errors which have cost Town points.

If Town are to progress next season, as Powell hopes, then the Terriers boss will have to be ruthless enough to dispose of those who have failed to make an impact under him.

Huddersfield Town (0) v Sheffield Wednesday (0) - Huddersfield goalkeeper Joe Murphy makes a late save.

And Murphy falls into that category, having failed to make enough of an impression on the manager this season.

He finds himself in the similarly unfortunate position of Lee Peltier and Radoslaw Majewski, in that he was a Mark Robins signing and one that Powell has simply not been able to integrate as a key member in his team.

A new addition would apply the gentle pressure required on Smithies to allow the homegrown shot-stopper to reach even greater heights and ensure any slip in standards would not be tolerated.

Much will depend on Powell's faith in third-choice Lloyd Allinson, who Murphy was given the nod over despite not being fully fit for the derby defeat to Leeds United, because the manager rates him but the difficulties he has encountered in bedding in youngsters make this a tricky issue.
