In a study compiled by The Guardian, each Championship club from the 2012/2013 season was under scrutiny as the contents of their coffers were laid bare.

The club accounts guide detailed who owns each club, the turnover, wage bills and how much clubs lost or made during the 2012/2013 campaign.

Bolton Wanderers were the primary losers, topping each of the four negative categories, while Lancashire rivals Blackburn also feature heavily, with payable interest the only area in which they did not fall into the top five.

Both clubs, despite receiving parachute payments for their descent from the Premier League in 2011/2012, retained the two highest wages bills in the Championship but their huge fanbases have proven a contributing factor in maintaining their turnovers as some of the best in the league.

Huddersfield Town's only poor result comes in net debt, where they were ninth out of the 15 clubs to release their figures for this area.

Town's wage bill over the season was the 16th-highest in the division, or eighth-lowest if you prefer, while only Barnsley - one of just four clubs in the division to register a profit before tax - had less payable interest than Town.

The Terriers also finished 17th in terms of losses before tax but their turnover ranked as one of the lowest in the division at 21st.

It underlines the challenge Town face at this level each year that the three sides below Town's total of £11.2m for 2012/2013 (Barnsley, Peterborough and Bristol City) have since been relegated, with the latter largely unable to recover in League One last term.

The other clubs alongside Barnsley to register profts were now-established Premier League outfit Crystal Palace, plus Championship duo Blackpool and Watford.
