Huddersfield Town head to newly-promoted Chesterfield for the 2014/2015 Capital One Cup first round.

Mark Robins' charges were League Cup semi-finalists in 1981 and again 1990 but in recent times have struggled crashing out in the first round in four of the last five seasons - three times against lower league opposition.

2013/14 - Reached the third round

Huddersfield Town 2-1 Bradford City

James Vaughan's well-taken brace helped Town to a win over the 2012/2013 beaten finalists as Bradford fell at the first hurdle against their local rivals. Vaughan struck his first from 20 yards before Adam Hammill teed him up with a neat cross to make it two. Future Town signings Nahki Wells grabbed a consolation in stoppage time with a stunning long-range strike but it was too little too late.

Huddersfield Town 3-2 Charlton Athletic

Town edged the Addicks in a five-goal thriller at the John Smith's Stadium thanks to goals from Joel Lynch, Jonathan Hogg and Hammill. It was a see-saw contest, with Charlton seizing a first-half lead through Dale Stevens but Lynch quickly replied to make it all square at the break. Marvin Sordell put the visitors in front once more but Hogg and Hammill teamed up to send Town through to the third round for the first time in 10 years.

Hull City 1-0 Huddersfield Town

The cup run came to an abrupt halt as Premier League outfit Hull City saw off Robins' men in a low-key tie thanks to Nick Proschwitz's second-half strike. The rangy striker turned in George Boyd's cross in a turgid affair as Town exited the competition in a rather meek fashion, with Oscar Gobern's wayward header the most meaningful attempt on goal from the visitors' perspective.

2012/13 - First-round exit

Preston North End 2-0 Huddersfield Town

Town were dumped out of the competition at the first attempt as then manager Graham Westley's Lilywhites side sauntered to a comfortable win over a disappointing Terriers side. Preston, fielding 10 new summer signings, took the lead through Jack King's header before fellow debutant Nicky Wroe wrapped up a win just before the interval.

2011/12 - Reached the second round

Port Vale 2-4 Huddersfield Town

After trailing to Gary Roberts' 24th minute strike, Town responded in style to go in at the break in front courtesy of a brace from Lee Novak. Jack Hunt notched a third before Town's own Gary Roberts added some gloss to the scoreline, rendering Doug Loft's late effort rather futile as Town marched on.

Cardiff City 5-3 Huddersfield Town

Town went out in the second round in dramatic circumstances as their herculean efforts proved in vain at Ninian Park against the eventual beaten finalists. The Bluebirds raced into a two-goal lead through Gabor Gyepes and former Town striker Jon Parkin, but Lee Clark's visiting side stunned their hosts by turning the game on its head thanks to Jordan Rhodes and Danny Ward, before the former struck in the 88th minute to put them in dreamland. It looked like the striker's two-goal haul was enough to reach the third round but, in stoppage time, Don Cowie rammed home an equaliser. It proved crucial as Craig Conway and Cowie finally saw off plucky Town's resistance with two extra-time goals.

2010/11 - Reached the second round

Carlisle United 0-1 Huddersfield Town

Rhodes was the matchwinner as his 90th-minute winner sent Town through at the Cumbrians' expense. Novak teed up the marksman to net with just seconds to spare as he found acres of space to tuck home, after previously being frustrated by the crossbar on two occasions. The home side had chances of their own through James Berrett and Gary Madine, but could not force home the elusive goal.

Everton 5-1 Huddersfield Town

The Toffees put their then League One opponents to the sword with a clinical display in front of goal, with Marouane Fellaini, Jack Rodwell, former Town striker Jermaine Beckford, Louis Saha and Leon Osman all finding the net. Jonny Heitinga headed into his own goal to offer Town scant consolation, with the Dutchman also missing a penalty - the result of Lee Peltier's second yellow card for a foul - but Beckford proved far more in tune from the spot as Town were left to rue hitting the woodwork twice in the opening period through Lee Croft and Roberts.

2009/10 - Reached the second round

Huddersfield Town 3-1 Stockport County

Another Rhodes-inspired performance was the tonic against Stockport as his double sent Town through to the second round. His first came right on the stroke of half-time as he drilled home a loose ball before curling home from just outside the box after an error in the County defence. Theo Robinson danced through to add a third before Adam Griffin grabbed a late goal for the visitors with a low effort.

Newcastle United 4-3 Huddersfield Town

The Terriers were involved in another thriller in this competition against Premier League side Newcastle but this time they spurned a 3-1 advantage as they failed to reach the third round. Danny Guthrie had put the Magpies in front but Robinson responded within a minute before netting a penalty. Rhodes added to his side's advantage but Newcastle stormed back thanks to Geremi, a penalty of their own through Shola Ameobi and Kevin Nolan, who broke Huddersfield hearts with a late winner.
