So when was the last time Huddersfield Town won their first two league games of a season?

Supporters have been asking the question while celebrating the brilliant 2-1 win at Newcastle United, which backed up the opening-day victory against Brentford at the John Smith’s Stadium.

A travelling support of 3,200 were in a crowd of 52,079 at St James’ Park, where Nahki Wells and Jack Payne scored either side of a Dwight Gayle equaliser.

And it was the first time Town have won their opening two league matches since they were in League One in 2007-08.

At home to Yeovil on the opening day, Luke Beckett netted after 17 minutes and it proved enough for a 1-0 win.

Then, after losing at Blackpool 1-0 in the Carling Cup, Town defeated Bournemouth away 1-0, with another Beckett goal, this time after 43 minutes.

At Championship (second tier) level, it’s the first time Town have won their opening two league games since 1969-70, when they finished as champions.

That season they won the first three – against Oxford away in the first match, Preston at home in the third and, guess who, Aston Villa at home in the second.
