The Terriers went behind in just the seventh minute as Sam Byram steered home past stand-in goalkeeper Joe Murphy, but Town quickly responded and were on level terms when Harry Bunn headed home a Jacob Butterfield corner.
But there was a sting in the tale for Chris Powell and his side as substitutes Mirco Antenucci and Billy Sharp combined for the latter to head home at the death as Town's misery was compounded when they lost Tommy Smith to a nasty head injury.
