Joe Lolley scored his first goal at the John Smith’s Stadium to complete a spirited Town comeback and make it six Championship games unbeaten for Chris Powell’s side.

The substitute’s fourth goal for the club, sweetly struck from 25 yards in the 84th minute, earned Powell his 50th point in his 40th league match as manager.

Town, who fell victim to two Blackburn goals in five minutes, including one from old boy Jordan Rhodes, reduced the arrears through Jacob Butterfield’s well-struck 39th-minute free-kick.

And while it took the combined late efforts of Alex Smithies, who made a fine save from Josh King, and Oscar Gobern, who cleared Rhodes’ effort from the rebound, to deny Rovers the spoils, the home team merited their third successive draw.

It wasn’t quite as frantic as the previous Saturday’s 4-4 home stalemate with Derby County, but there was still plenty of entertainment.

Town’s fiver admission offer helped swell the crowd to a tickets-issued 17,056 (1,087 visiting fans), the third-biggest at the stadium this season (after the visits of Leeds United and Middlesbrough).

And there was never the feel of an end-of-season meeting of two mid-table sides.

With on-loan Manchester United left-back Reece James ruled out by a groin injury, Powell handed a debut to teenage defender Joe Wilkinson.

Against accomplished frontmen like Rhodes and Rudy Gestede, who grabbed Blackburn’s opener and his 21st goal of the campaign, it was a testing baptism, but he never looked overawed and can be encouraged by his contribution.

Unfortunately the academy product, who played on the right side of defence with Tommy Smith on the left, had an unwanted role in both Rovers’ goals.

After determined work and a shot by Rhodes which was blocked by Mark Hudson, the ball fell nicely to former Cardiff City man Gestede, whose shot took a deflection off Wilkinson on its way into the net.

Then the former junior team captain headed a harmless-looking ball out for a corner which was delivered by Conway and headed home by Rhodes.

The 25-year-old, a hat-trick scorer in Huddersfield last season, has notched on each of his three returns to Town since being sold for £8m in August 2012.

And his latest effort means he has reached the 20-goal mark in each of the last six seasons.

But thankfully, it wasn’t all about Rhodes as Town, who scarcely deserved to be two down, once again showed character and fight.

Butterfield has had a fine season, and it was great to see him chalk up a sixth goal since his August switch from Middlesbrough.

Hopefully there will be plenty more to come from the midfielder next time around.

Sean Scannell is another to have flourished, and he showed his prowess on both flanks after switching from right to left after the 59th-minute introduction of Lolley for Wilkinson.

It has certainly taken time for Lolley to adjust after his £350,000 transfer from Kidderminster Harriers in January 2014.

But the 22-year-old has bags of potential, and hopefully Powell will be able to coax more out of him, just as he has with Scannell.
