Spanish trialist Cristian Lopez made an impression as a sub as Huddersfield Town were beaten 4-2 by Europa League contenders Real Betis last night.

The 24-year-old ex-Real Madrid B striker went on after James Vaughan and Martin Paterson had netted for Mark Robins’ side and worked hard, having one drive beaten away.

Town started with Paterson up front alongside Vaughan and again began with Jordan Sinnott in central midfield.

They set off brightly, too, with some neat, quick passing and Oliver Norwood had a shot deflected onto the roof of the net!

The home side were rewarded with an opener on 12 minutes.

It came from neat work on the left by Sean Scannell and when he aimed his cross for the back of the box, fans’ favourite Vaughan was there to plant a firm header past ex-Charlton keeper Stephan Anderson.

Betis replied with a shot just wide from Markus Steinhofer and a shot by Joan Verdu which was well blocked by Adam Clayton, and then a flare-up between the Town midfielder and Nono seemed to spark the La Liga outfit into life – Nono being booked as Clayton got a talking to.

Town were defending solidly, however, and kept their shape pretty well.

Town almost went two up on 27 minutes when Jack Hunt’s cross was deflected to Scannell and he sent in a stinging low shot which Anderson did well to scramble around his right hand post.

Betis gathered themselves well after that and were level on 33 when Steinhofer found space on the right and supplied a perfect cross for Verdu to head home.

The Spanish side then took the lead within 90 seconds with a neatly worked corner which was flicked on for Chuli to turn the ball home at the back post.

Smithies saved well from Chuli shortly afterwards and then Sinnott forced a fine save at the other end after an excellent move sparked by Norwood's 40-yard pass to Vaughan, and his cross to the teenage midfielder.

Town sent on Jake Carroll, Danny Ward and Oscar Gobern for the second half while Betis made 10 changes.

Unfortunately, the man they left on was Chulli and, by the 51st minute he had completed his hat trick to put the visitors 4-1 up.

The first on 49 came from a brilliant kick from substitute keeper Argentine Guillermo Sara to Juanfran and his precision cross was turned in by the speedy No9.

The second was from a Juanfran break and expertly finished from 15 yards.

Town, however, quickly got one back following a block by Gobern, and when the ball broke to Paterson he fired in his second goal in as many friendlies.
