Adam Hammill has his sights set on more goals – and more assists – as Town prepare to take on Charlton in the FA Cup at the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday.

The versatile 25-year-old has figured in all 30 of Town’s matches so far this season, and is keen to keep busy against his club’s Championship rivals in the cut-price fourth-round tie.

Hammill, signed from Wolves in the close-season after a loan stint with Town last term, has nine assists, the latest for Nahki Wells at QPR last Saturday, and two goals.

Converted to a wing-back by Town boss Mark Robins, who managed him at Barnsley, the Liverpudlian is relishing the role.

“It’s forced me to become fitter and improved my game,” he said. “I can get up and down the pitch more and I can defend now, which is something I didn’t do much of before.”

Hammill says he’s also benefiting from a run of matches, explaining: “It’s been a difficult two years for me with a lot going on.

“I’d lost form and confidence and so it was important to have the right manager, staff and teammates behind me.

“The fans here have been great and I’d especially like to thank the people upstairs at Town for taking a chance on me. I hope to continue repaying everybody’s faith. Maybe I’m lacking a goal or two, but perhaps if I get one more will follow.”

Wells’ effort at Loftus Road was a second in as many games for the club-record £1.3m signing from Bradford, and while he is cup-tied this weekend (along with Joe Lolley), he will return to Championship duty when Town visit Bournemouth on Tuesday.

“Nahki has already had an impact and showed with two composed finishes the reason why the board paid the money for him,” said Hammill.

“With James Vaughan fit again, I think we have a strikeforce to be reckoned with.”

Charlton were 3-0 winners at Oxford in their third round replay thanks to two goals from Yann Kermogant and a Danny Green tap-in.
