He might show it in a different way to previous managers, but there’s no doubting how much defeats hurt Chris Powell.

Huddersfield Town’s derby setback at Leeds United still rankles, so imagine how he felt as he looked back at the loss at Norwich City in the calm of last Sunday morning.

Powell certainly won’t have overreacted, and the early dismissal of Murray Wallace was undoubtedly a major factor, but points will have been made during the squad review on Monday.

Town responded to that 3-0 loss at Leeds by embarking on a seven-match unbeaten run which included four wins.

The last in that sequence was the stylish 3-0 home destruction of Nottingham Forest, a performance which up to press, Powell’s side have been unable to replicate.

The 2-1 home victory over a buoyant Brentford a fortnight ago was a boost, but it remains the only three-point haul in the last six outings.

Compare that to Birmingham City, who have bounced back from an 8-0 home mauling by AFC Bournemouth chalking up four wins and two draws in seven.

It’s a statistic which sums up the unpredictability of the Championship, as does the fact that Brum’s only recent defeat was by basement side Blackpool.

The Seasiders’ boss, of course, is Lee Clark, who up until October 20, was in charge at St Andrews, having managed Town before that.

Former Blues defender Gary Rowett, an old teammate of Powell at Charlton Athletic and impressive in charge of Burton Albion, has come in.

The 40-year-old, assisted by former St Andrews goalkeeper Kevin Poole, has clearly made his mark, and like Powell, had had no real chance yet to reshape his squad.

Saturday’s 6-1 home romp against Reading, as well as sparking the departure of Nigel Adkins, hoisted Brum a point and two places above Town to 15th in the Championship.

It also put the name of teenager attacker Demarai Gray into the headlines because of his hat trick.

He’ll be one to watch for a defence shorn of Wallace through suspension and with Joel Lynch struggling to make the game because of his groin injury.

So too will David Cotterill, a scorer against Town when they were beaten 2-0 at Doncaster Rovers last season, and six-goal top scorer Clayton Donaldson.
