Town included senior professionals keeper Ian Bennett, midfielder Jim Goodwin, winger Lee Croft and trialist Bryan Hughes in an otherwise youthful outfit skippered by Liam Ridehalgh.

However, the game was only decided four minutes from time when substitute Gareth Seddon struck from a John Miles cross.

Town: Bennett, Goodwin, D’Arcy, Hughes, Pearson, Ridehalgh, Chippendale, Croft, McCaffrey, Birtles, Atkinson. Subs: Porter, Colton, Blakey, Crooks, Melling, Charlton.
