Chris Powell is relishing the prospect of a 20,000 derby crowd against Leeds United and believes Huddersfield Town fans can help roar their team to a season-high Championship slot with victory.

The Town boss is urging as many fans as possible to back Town’s bid for a fourth win in five league outings, which would catapult them to 10th in the standings ahead of the later matches.

Town’s best home gate of the season so far was 17,933 for Middlesbrough’s visit in September and the last time Town topped 20,000 was the 2-2 draw with Barnsley which ensured Championship survival for both sides on 4 May 2013 (21,614).

“The prospect of having 20,000 and more inside the John Smith’s on Saturday is an exciting one,” beamed Powell, who may hand a home debut to latest loan signing David Edgar.

“It’ll be the biggest home gate we’ve had during my five months as manager and it’ll ensure it’s an atmosphere that our players should relish playing in.”

Town’s last home match was an impressive 3-1 win against Watford and they are aiming to build on a welcome 1-0 away success at Wigan.

“Our fans were brilliant in our last game here,” added Powell.

“When Watford equalised out of the blue, they really stuck with our players and played their part in driving the team on to record a well-deserved victory.

“As we’re the early kick-off, we know we will move up to 10th in the table with three points and that has to be our aim.

“We’re taking things one game at a time, but I’m keen for us to look upwards and aim high.”

Powell’s first Town-Leeds derby ended in 3-0 disappointment at Elland Road and he’s keen to turn the tables this time.

“I’ve very quickly come to learn and love the passion that the people of Huddersfield have for their team and how much Town means to them,” he said.

“Our home record has been particularly good since I arrived and our target now is to keep that momentum going and give our fans the local bragging rights.”

Ticket sales are expected to beat 20,000 and some areas of the stadium are already close to capacity.

Seats are still available in advance (visit the club website) and there are deals for season-card holders, who can take a friend for £20, and also for families before 5pm tomorrow.
