David Wagner said he was happy and proud after Huddersfield Town kicked off their Championship season with a superb 2-1 home win against Brentford.

Just 91 days after losing to the same opposition 5-1, Town triumphed with goals from Elias Kachunga and Kasey Palmer in front of 18,479 - a 46-year-best for the club on opening day.

"I'm very happy and proud and it's good to have celebrations, and while this is just one game out of 46 it's very pleasing to get the three points," said Wagner.

"It was a good performance from the whole team and, at times, outstanding.

"We deserved it and the score could have been higher, but I am not going to moan too much because we are all very happy.

"It was the perfect start for us and the atmosphere created by the supporters, even before the start, was something we were able to carry through the match.

"I would like to thank each and every fan who backed us, they were brilliant, and having such tremendous support was a massive help to the whole team."

On Kachunga, he added: "It was a perfect first goal for him because he worked unbelievably hard.

"He was our first defender at all times and he scored, so it couldn't have gone better. And his injury is not serious."

On Palmer, Wagner added: "When Kasey went on I just told him to enjoy it and to decide the game!

"That's exactly what he did and it was a great moment for us."
