David Wagner says Nahki Wells is a central part of his future planning at Huddersfield Town.

Championship rivals Derby County and Norwich City are said to be keen on the striker.

But Wagner says there has been no contact from any other club over the 26-year-old.

And the boss could hand the Bermuda international a first outing of the season in Tuesday’s English Football League Cup first-round tie at Shrewsbury Town.

Wells, Town’s top scorer for the last two seasons, is on the way back from a knee problem.

He will be assessed during a Tuesday-morning training session, after which Wagner will decide on his 18-man squad to face the League I hosts.

Wagner will also run the rule over Wells’ fellow frontman Elias Kachunga, who picked up a leg injury during Saturday’s 2-1 opening-day home win over Brentford.

“It would be good to have two natural strikers to select from,” said Wagner, who pushed wideman Rajiv van La Parra up front after Kachunga went off.

“Nahki must play a little catch-up after missing some of pre-season, but he is heading the right way.

“It is no surprise to have speculation over a good player, which he is, but we have had no phone call or email from another club.”

Town have no financial need to sell Wells, who cost a then-club record £1.3m from Bradford City in January 2014 and is under contract to 2018.

And Wagner continued: “Our aim is to work with Nahki, and his aim is to work with us.

“Every transfer window there will be speculation and I will be happy when transfer deadline day is gone.”

Wells netted 18 times last time around and overall has notched 39 goals for Town – after 53 in two and a half seasons at Bradford.
