Boss Mark Robins is hoping striker James Vaughan can lead the Huddersfield Town line on Saturday for the first time in over four months.

The 26-year-old frontman has been working hard on the training ground in the hope he can play a part in the friendly against Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park.

Vaughan hasn’t worn blue and white stripes since the 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough back in March, when he was taken off after 75 minutes.

He subsequently underwent surgery to remove a cyst from his right knee and he’s been recuperating since, building up his fitness at PPG Canalside after treatment in the USA.

Robins – who has also been without Anthony Gerrard (calf), Danny Ward (hamstring) and Oscar Gobern (toe) so far – is hoping Vaughan can feature, especially with new arrival Radoslaw Majewski also firmly in the mix.

“James and the others have been doing some running and they are getting ever closer, which is great,” said Robins, whose side will also face Newcastle United at the John Smith’s on Tuesday (7.45).

“As I’ve said, we want everyone fighting as much as possible because it thickens up the squad.

“Hopefully we can get them back in the group, but everything we are doing at the moment is about fitness and it’s about being right for August 9 and beyond. Nothing else matters.”

On Majewski, Robins added: “He is in pre-season himself and we need to keep him fit, because he is one of those who can open things up for us.

“He has the ability to link play for us and he can get a goal, so he’s also a goal threat for us.”
