Dean Whitehead believes new head coach David Wagner could lead a Middlesbrough-style transformation of Huddersfield Town.

The seasoned midfielder was a Boro player when Aitor Karanka replaced Tony Mowbray as boss in October 2013.

The Teessiders reached the Championship play-off final last season (Whitehead faced Norwich City in the Wembley final) and are currently fourth.

Town’s close-season recruit sees similarities between the approach of Spaniard Karanka and German Wagner.

“The head coach has brought new ideas and practices,” said the 33-year-old from Town’s Spanish training camp.

“The intensity level of training has gone through the roof, and the lads are buying into it.

“I saw Aitor Karanka pretty much transform Middlesbrough, and I think the same can happen here.

“It won’t be an overnight process, but I think we have the personnel to play the way we’re asked.

“We have an exciting opportunity and push forward.”

Town will visit holders Chelsea in the third round of the FA Youth Cup (date to be confirmed).
