HUDDERSFIELD Town skipper Peter Clarke says Jordan Rhodes has the finishing class of Robbie Fowler in his pomp but believes Town’s own match-winners can make the headlines when Blackburn Rovers visit tonight.

Defender Clarke witnessed the vast majority of Rhodes’ 87 goals for Town and is well aware of the damage he could wreak if allowed space and time at the John Smith’s Stadium.

It’s a first return for 22-year-old Rhodes since his £8m move across the Pennines, but Clarke says Town have the ability to upstage him and leapfrog their rivals in the Championship standings.

“Jordan is one on his own really and, with the way he passes the ball into the net rather than being rash and lashing at shots, he reminds me of Robbie Fowler when he first burst on the scene,” said Clarke.

“He knows where the goal is and he almost caresses the ball into the net at times.

“When he first arrived with us he was not long out of youth football, so he developed physically over the time and also worked hard on his all-round game.

“He was able to build on his natural ability in front of goal, and the work he did in training helped him reap rewards on the pitch.”

So can Town stop him on a night when James Vaughan (thigh) and Jermaine Beckford (hamstring) are facing fitness tests and Jack Hunt completes a two-match ban?

“I hope he gets a fantastic reception from our fans because we will be eternally grateful to him for the important goals he scored for this club, especially last season when he was fantastic,” said the skipper.

“He has moved on and, as friends and professionals we wish him well, but we hope he leaves tonight having drawn a blank and Blackburn have no more points.

“He is a very calm, clinical finisher and we will have to keep a close eye on him, that’s for sure, but they have other talented players as well and we need to work hard as a group to try and keep them quiet.

“We also have match-winners in our side, too, and in Vaughan, Beckford and Novak we have players who I’m glad are still in blue and white striped shirts.”
