Huddersfield Town are closing in on Australian international left-back Jason Davidson after his release by West Bromwich Albion.

Completing a deal for the 23-year-old, who featured in last year’s World Cup in Brazil, would be a real coup for the Championship club, who are without a specialist in that position.

Signed from Dutch side Heracles by Alan Irvine a year ago, he made only five appearances for Albion, and didn’t feature under Tony Pulis.

Davidson is desperate for regular first-team football, and it seems Town are set to offer him that opportunity.

The Melbourne-born player, who has also played in his home country, Japan and Portugal, has returned to England after being with Australia for their World Cup qualifier in Kyrgyzstan.

Davidson made 51 appearances for Heracles, and joined West Brom on a two-year contract last August.

But he managed only one Premier League start, and a one appearance as a substitute, his other three outings all coming in the Capital One Cup.

He started all three of Australia’s World Cup matches in Brazil, against Chile, Holland and Spain, and helped them win this year’s Asian Cup.

The son of former Australian international and Nottingham Forest midfielder Alan Davidson, he has 18 caps.

Of his release by West Brom, Davidson said: “Sometimes coaches love you and sometimes you don’t fit their style.

“You have to respect that and we mutually agreed to move on. I think West Brom respected me as a person and as a player and allowed me the opportunity to see where I go next.

“The most important thing for me is to be happy and play week in, week out. I need to make sure this is a big season for me.”
