Joel Lynch believes familiarity with Huddersfield Town’s new tactics and formation will breed confidence and vital positivity in the final third of the pitch.

The back-in-favour centre-back and his teammates head to Millwall this afternoon aiming to build on what the 25-year-old sees as two encouraging Championship performances so far.

Mark Robins’ men lost out to the game’s only goal at Lynch’s previous club Nottingham Forest, then held QPR, another much-vaunted side, 1-1 at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Forest’s victory at Blackburn last Saturday – only early leaders Watford and Blackpool can match their maximum points haul after two matches – only reinforced Lynch’s thoughts.

“We could, and I thought should have at least drawn with Forest, and we certainly could have beaten QPR,” said the Wales international.

“It was a good open game last Saturday, and we created chances against one of the favourites for this league.

“They have some very well-known players and some very good players, and while we wanted to win, we stuck to our plan and got what was a good point for us.”

That plan involved sticking to Robins’ prescribed passing system, and starting with a 3-5-2 system, with Lynch as the left-sided centre-back, before a switch to  4-4-2, with the ex-Brighton man as left-back.

“The three centre-back system is fairly new, something we first worked on before the Capital One Cup game against Bradford,” explained Lynch, who is keen to get back into the Wales squad after missing out for Wednesday’s goalless draw with the Republic of Ireland.

“We’ve tried to keep things simple in the early stages, then when the game starts to open up, work as hard as we can to get our midfielders on the ball so that they can try to make something happen.

“We’re starting to do that, but we need to be more positive in the final third in order to get more goals, and that will come.

“Of course you have to be versatile, and playing at left-back isn’t a problem for me. I’ve done it quite a few times in the past.

“We went 4-4-2 to try to counter what they were doing, and I ended up marking a really good player in Shaun Wright-Phillips. I thought I did all right against him.”

Having fallen out of favour after Robins arrived at the club last February, Lynch has started all three games so far on the back of a solid pre-season.

“I’m happy with the way things are going, and I’m happy to play any position the gaffer wants me to if it means I’m in the side,” he added.

“He knows that if he picks me, I will work as hard as possible to maintain the standards I set myself. I want to kick on this season, and I want the team to kick on.”
