HUDDERSFIELD Town will discover their first competitive opponents of the season when the draw for the first round of the newly-named Capital One Cup is made tomorrow.

Unusually, the opening ties in the cup (Capital One have replaced Carling as sponsors after agreeing a four-year deal) take place before the start of the npower Football League season on Saturday, August 18.

That date is later than usual to avoid a clash between football and the London Olympics.

It’s possible that first-round cup-ties could be fixed for Saturday, August 11, if both clubs agree, otherwise matches will take place in midweek.

All Championship clubs except Blackburn and Bolton will be in the draw (regionalised North and South) with teams from League I and II.

Thirteen Premier League clubs as well as relegated pair Blackburn and Bolton join in round two, to be played at the end of August, while the seven top-flight sides involved in European football come in for round three.

The final will be at Wembley on Sunday, February 24 next year.

Town were 4-2 winners at Port Vale in last season’s first round before going out in the second round at beaten finalists Cardiff, who won 5-3 after extra time.

The last time the League Cup formed Town’s first competitive fixture was in 1980, when the opening round was two-legged and Mick Buxton’s side went out to Blackburn on the away goals rule after a goalless first leg at Ewood Park and 1-1 draw after extra time at Leeds Road.

Town’s best run in the competition was to the semi-finals in 1967-68, when Tom Johnston’s side beat Wolves, Norwich, West Ham and Fulham before going out 6-3 on aggregate against Arsenal.

Promotion to the Championship means Town will not compete in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.
