Huddersfield Town are ready to play the waiting game over out-of-favour frontmen Martin Paterson and Jon Stead.

Both players, signed on two-year deals last summer, finished the season out on loan, Northern Ireland international Paterson at Bristol City and Stead at Bradford.

And now both are available for transfer, although there have been no enquiries as yet.

Town believe that situation will change as the new campaign nears and the market, quiet so far this close-season, hots up.

Stoke-based former Burnley man Paterson managed 17 starts and nine appearances from the bench, scoring five goals, but slipped down the pecking order after the £1.3m Town record signing of Nahki Wells from Bradford.

Stead’s temporary move to Valley Parade helped fill the void after the Bermudian’s departure, the 31-year-old claiming one goal in eight games for the Bantams.

The Huddersfield-born player, who came through Town’s academy ranks and scored 24 times in 76 outings to earn a £1.25m move to Blackburn in February 2004, also had a loan stint at Oldham last season.

He played 14 times for Town, but just six of those were starts. His sole goal was the winner in the 3-2 home victory over Leeds in October.

Stead rejoined Town from Bristol City and has also played for Sunderland, Sheffield United and Ipswich.
