JASON McCARTNEY says Huddersfield Town have given the whole area a lift by preserving their Championship status.

The Colne Valley MP , who watched last season’s dramatic final-day clash with Barnsley , says it was every bit as exciting as winning promotion at Wembley.

And he believes remaining at this level gives Town the perfect opportunity to establish themselves for years to come.

“If Town are doing well then the whole area feels good, and that’s how it’s been since the season rounded off,” said the lifelong fan.

“The club is a massive part of the community and an integral part of what goes on around here – with lots of things revolving around the club, the football and their success.

“People feel good about themselves when things are going well and I was delighted for everyone that the club stayed up.

“The Championship is a great league, there are some superb derbies to look forward to, some terrific matches in prospect and some tremendous players to watch – so it’s all good.”

McCartney joined the clamour for James Vaughan to be signed permanently from Norwich.

“Vaughan is a quality player and I think we would all like to see him here,” he said.

“Vaughan and Jermaine Beckford showed in the last few games what they were capable of if they could stay fit, and if the club could bring in James then that would be great.

“The gap between the Championship and League I is huge, so you need quality players like that.

“Last season was amazing in that we went into the last game with 57 points and could still have been relegated, but we did ever so well at the beginning before suffering a dip and I think we finished off really well.

“The club wanted to stay up and stabilise, so now they have the chance to build for the future.”
