Malcolm Turner has been a Huddersfield Town fan all his life, but there’s a piece of his heart that will always be reserved for Queen of the South.

The Shepley man’s love of the Dumfries side, who play in the Scottish second tier, goes right back to his birth in the nearby village of Crossmichael.

The family moved to Huddersfield when he was five, but Malcolm, now 68, has never forgotten his roots, and is the Queens match-ball sponsor for Saturday’s game against Cowdenbeath.

The motor dealer, married to Joyce, will be represented at Palmerston Park by son Jamie, 34, and daughter Amy, 26, who are both Town season-card holders.

For Amy, it’s a second trip North of the border in six days after she attended last Sunday’s Scottish League Cup final in which Aberdeen beat Inverness Caledonian Thistle 4-2 on penalties after a goalless draw after extra time at Celtic Park, which staged the big match because Hampden is under redevelopment ahead of this summer’s Commonwealth Games.

“Amy has a friend who supports Inverness, so we’re hoping for a more successful outcome for Queens,” said Malcolm.

“I’ve always followed Town – one of my good mates is (former player) Dick Krzywicki) – but I’ve always followed Queen of the South as well.

“Like Town, they play in the Championship, and like Town, they’ve been a bit of a mid-table side this season.

“For me, the ideal player is Chris Balderstone, who played for both Town, at the start of his career and Queens, near the end after his long service with Carlisle, but there are others I’ve admired as well.

“Among them is Jim Thomson, who was captain when Queens reached the Scottish Cup final six years ago.

“He was a good centre-back who served Queens really well for a long period and now has a club ambassador role like Andy Booth at Town and gets out and about in the local area.

“I’ve been back many times to see family and friends, and I’ve often been to Palmerston to watch matches.

“The club have given me a lot of pleasure down the years, and it’s nice to be able to do my little bit to help them out.”
