Huddersfield Town’s Chelsea loan man Kasey Palmer thanked the fans for their backing at Shrewsbury.

The 19-year-old – who described his debut winner against Brentford as his best moment in football – went on after 58 minutes of the 2-1 EFL Cup defeat at Greenhous Meadow.

Palmer tweeted: “Not the result or performance we wanted, but we go again on Saturday!

“Travelling fans were class again.”

A total of 652 Town fans made the trip to Shropshire but saw Town fall to a late Louis Dodds winner after Elias Kachunga had wiped out a 22-second opener from AJ Leitch-Smith.

Coach David Wagner’s decision not to go with leading scorer Nahki Wells after his recovery from a knee problem – and not to later use him from the bench and opt for Michael Hefele instead – has bemused a section of support.

On the outcome, Chris Green from Dalton said: “I think this was was abundant corroboration that a third striker should be signed – and Mark Uth is the man we should be hunting, or a similar style to his.

“The fact that we are not clinical is ineluctable, and we have to get hot on the heels of a forward somewhere on this planet to fill that void.

“Midfielders and defenders cannot be expected to score the goals – they are not a Plan B and commonly only chip in with the odd goal. That is the job of a striker.

“Lastly, Wells is not match fit at this moment of time, and we cannot predict when that may alter. If Kachunga was to pick up a nasty injury, that leaves us with no senior frontman, and Rekeil Pyke is far too young to handle the weight of responsibility for goals on his shoulders.”

Peter, from Penistone, agrees.

He told www.examiner.co.uk : “Last season we played Lynch and Hudson up front – this season it’s Hefele.

“Why on earth don’t we stop this nonsense and get another striker? It’s a specialist position.”

Roy, from Dagenham, thinks more finishing work is needed on the training ground at PPG Canalside.

“As I said after the first game, we look the business this season but a great deal of composure in front of goal is needed from all players,” he explained.

“This needs addressing ASAP. Shooting practice please Mr Wagner.”

Dave, from Lighcliffe, reckons the Cup exit just shows Town are a work in progress, while others feel it’s ‘the same old story’ when the John Smith’s side play lower-league opposition.

Pudsey-based Andrew messaged: “Profoundly disappointing after Saturday. We should not, I think, build up our hopes yet. The Barnsley match could be the defining moment!”

SPH, from Almondbury, said: “It would appear that all the old problems from last year were in evidence once more at Shrewsbury, a team we always struggle against.

“The first-minute lack of concentration, failure to score when on top and allow a late goal from the opposition.

“Let’s hope this is now sorted out for the league encounters against the two ex-Premier League teams or we could be shipping a ton of goals.”

Michael follows Town from York and commented: “Embarrassed. We have to learn how to break down teams of this standard. Newcastle away doesn’t bear thinking about.”

Tony, of Salendine Nook, added: “Too early to make a judgement but no Nakhi Wells seems ominous, especially since Wagner had to deliver a cup run.”
