Huddersfield Town fans feel manager Chris Powell should be more proactive with substitutions to help the club win matches.

The John Smith’s Stadium chief sent on only James Vaughan in the 1-1 draw against Brighton, whereas counterpart Chris Hughton used all three.

On Saturday, too, Powell used only Harry Bunn from the bench to replace Ishmael Miller while Blackburn utilised all three swaps.

Chief, from Shelley, commented on the Brighton performance: “A slight improvement in performance from Saturday, but still winless in three home games against mediocre opposition.

“Need to be more positive and show more desire to win games.

“More adventure required, particularly more use of substitutions which Chris Powell seems relunctant to do!”

Stuart, from Birstall, added: “Fair, but would be improved if the manager was aware he could use substitutes – Blackburn and Brighton both used three!”

Roger, of Kirkburton, was along the same lines.

“Dire first half, much better second,” he said, “but lack of positive use of subs.

“What do Hammill and Lolley have to do to get on the pitch?”

Yvonne, a supporter from Mirfield, said she was shell-shocked by the first-half display.

“Played really well second half, passed the ball well and a brilliant goal from our best player, Jacob Butterfield,” she explained.

“More changes should have been made second half – Ishmael was shattered.”

A fan called simply ‘H’, from Golcar, commented: “Poor performance first half. Second half excellent, special praise for Hogg and Butterfield.

“Miller needs to stay on his feet more and Powell needs to make decisions on subs when individuals look tired.”

Outlane-based Danny said: “Poor opening half, Smith once again the weak link, no outlet on the right.

“Should have brought Hammill on but second half was excellent – credit Powell and staff.

“Disappointed Smithies leaving, but life as a Town fan goes on.”

Richard, from Kirkburton, had been ready to call it a day.

“At the end of the first half I was saying to other supporters that enough was enough, and I wouldn’t be coming back to watch this disorganised rubbish,” he recalled.

“In the second half, a different Town turned up.

“Still concerned over Powell’s ability to manage. Murphy and Butterfield were excellent.

“The first goal was junior-school marking and no wonder Murphy was angry.

“Still negative tactics from Powell and still leaving Joe Lolley on the bench – a player with flair. Disgraceful. We need players like him.”

Glenn, from Leigh, questioned: “Why do we fall asleep then wake up in second half?

“Good point against decent attacking side, but must use the Smithies money to strengthening our weak areas.”

Andrew, from Pudsey, had several quick points.

“Woeful first half!” he said.

“Hudson, Smith and Bunn not good enough! We must not sell Butterfield.

“Why we’re Lolley and Hammill not brought on for more pace? Hogg very good again.”

Andy, from Settle – the Dales Terrier – concluded: “If Town could have settled earlier in this game it would have been totally different, with both sides equally matched.

“The performance level has been set, so come on Town, consistency will be vital over the season. You have proved you can achieve against the best.”
