Lee Peltier says he’s returning to Huddersfield Town a better player than when he left for Leicester three years ago.

The versatile defender has signed a three-year deal with the John Smith’s Stadium club after leaving neighbours and Championship rivals Leeds, where he still had a year on his contract, by mutual consent.

The 27-year-old Liverpudlian is Town’s second close-season recruit after former Coventry keeper Joe Murphy.

And after a difficult season at Leeds, he’s looking forward to a more settled environment along the A62.

An Elland Road skipper under Neil Warnock, he fell out of favour under Brian McDermott and spent the last two months of last season on loan at Nottingham Forest.

The East Midlands club were keen to make the move permanent.

But Town, where Peltier made 103 appearances between 2009, when he signed from Yeovil, and 2011, when he joined Leicester in a £1m deal, held sway.

“I’m a better player than the one who left, without a doubt,” said the former Liverpool man.

“I’ve got a lot of Championship experience at two big, competitive clubs in Leicester and Leeds and that has helped me.

“Hopefully I can add that experience, along with a bit of quality, to Town.

“I know the manager (Mark Robins) likes to change the shape of the team and that’s something that suits me.

“I think my versatility is a big reason that the manager wanted me.

“Whether I’m at full-back or even right side centre-back in a three, or elsewhere, I don’t mind where I play.”

Town were still in League I when Peltier moved up to the Championship.

Now they are approaching a third successive season in the second tier, and Peltier added: “With Dean Hoyle still the chairman, moving back here felt right.

“The stability of this club and how it operates are the main reasons I’ve come back.

“I had a very good, enjoyable time during my first spell here. I made a lot of good friends that I still keep in touch with now.

“The club are ambitious to keep moving forward and I’m pleased I can be a part of that.

“The manager is adamant the team will have a real go this season.”
