Mark Robins will focus on making sure Huddersfield Town hit the ground running with a tough start to the new season kicking off against Bournemouth on Saturday, August 9.

The following two Skybet Championship matches – after the Capital One Cup trip to Chesterfield – are massive away tests against Cardiff City, newly relegated from the Premier League, and Reading on Tuesday, August 19.

The draft 2014-15 fixture list released today features a mouth-watering Christmas programme for fans with a trip to promoted Rotherham United on Boxing Day followed by a home clash with Bolton Wanderers on Sunday, December 28.

Town’s big derby matches against Leeds United are at Elland Road on Saturday, September 20, and at the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday, January 31.

At Easter, Town are listed to play at Sheffield Wednesday on the Saturday (April 4) before taking on Ipswich at home on Easter Monday – but they may look to bring forward the Hillsborough fixture 24 hours to Good Friday to give the players an extra day between games.

Town’s final fixture is again away (they were at Watford to round off last season), but this time it’s Blackpool on Saturday, May 2 – a fixture many fans will target for a weekend stay.

“The release of the fixtures is always an exciting time, because supporters immediately start planning their holidays around following the club,” said club operations director Ann Hough.

“It’s great to have a home start with Bournemouth coming to the John Smith’s and then we’ve got three successive away trips the following Tuesday, Saturday and Tuesday, which is a tough programme first-up.

“Quite a few people might decide to stay down to take in the Reading match after the game at Cardiff, and these are the sorts of things our fans can now decide on with the fixture list being put out.

“We’ve had the closed-season lull now, the players will be back in for pre-season training on July 1 and then everything is geared towards the big kick-off on August 9 – so it’s a really exciting time.”

There are international breaks for European Championship qualifiers on the weekends of September 6-7, October 11-12 and November 15-16, when England play Slovenia at 5pm.

The break in 2015 is the weekend of March 28-29.

Town, of course, may well be picked for live TV coverage at some stage.

The three teams who came down from the top flight – Cardiff, Fulham and Norwich – all visit Town in the second half of the season, while both matches against Wolves, both against Reading and both against Brighton are on Tuesday nights – the away trip to the Amex being on Tuesday, April 14, after a Saturday trip to face Nottingham Forest on the 11th.

The third round of the FA Cup is on Saturday, January 3, and, while clubs have the option of bringing forward a midweek match to New Year’s Day if they wish, it’s unlikely Town will take that up.

Bournemouth at home on the opening day is a repeat of the fixture in 2001, when Kenny Irons netted for Town in a 1-0 win in front of 10,137.
