Jacob Butterfield is backing Huddersfield Town teammates Nahki Wells and James Vaughan to unpick the tightest defence in the Championship at Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Both frontmen were on the mark as Watford were beaten 3-1 at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Wells has 11 goals for the season and Vaughan has notched twice since his return from a torn calf.

While Town are 15th, Boro are up in fourth, having conceded only 17 goals in 25 matches.

Aitor Karanka’s side have been breached just seven times at the Riverside, where they have won six and drawn four of their 12 games.

Town aim to follow in the footsteps of Sheffield Wednesday and Reading, both victorious on Teesside in August.

And former Boro midfielder Butterfield says Wells and Vaughan can pose the home team problems.

“Based on how they played against Watford I’d say they can definitely make it as a partnership,” said Butterfield, who joined Town in August, when fellow midfielder Adam Clayton went the other way.

“I haven’t seen them together very much because James has been out injured, but they both scored against Watford and took their chances well.

“It’s true they both like to play on the shoulder and look to be a threat in behind, but they can both hold the ball up and they looked strong and showed real fight.

“If they can add that to their game, which they are certainly capable of, they can complement each other and do everything that we as a team need them to do.”

Town have taken just one point from the last 15 available on the road.

And Butterfield added: “It’s something we need to address and we are trying to do that.

“We’ve won two on the bounce in the league, and not lost in three, and we want to maintain momentum.”
