Huddersfield Town could launch a bid to sign James Tavernier from under the noses of newly-promoted Rotherham.

The Newcastle right-back has been on loan to the Millers, helping them to Wembley glory in the League I play-offs.

The 22-year-old is under contract at St James’ Park for another year.

But the Premier League club are said to be willing to sell – and Rotherham are keen to do business.

Town, who have had talks with Coventry keeper Joe Murphy, are looking for defensive reinforcements after the departure of out-of-contract Calum Woods, who is a reported target of Barnsley and Bradford.

The John Smith’s Stadium club, whose reported interest in Rotherham midfielder Ben Pringle appears to have cooled, have also been linked with Coventry’s Cyrus Christie, but sources suggest Bradford’s Stephen Darby is not a target.

Tavernier knows West Yorkshire well, having been born in Bradford, spent time in the Leeds youth system and played for Farsley.

Newcastle signed him in 2008, and he has made seven starts, all in cup football, and two Premier League appearances from the bench.

He has also had loan spells at Gateshead, Carlisle, Sheffield Wednesday, MK Dons and Shrewsbury.

Tavernier made 31 appearances for Rotherham this season, scoring five goals, taking his overall career tally to 87 games.

The Millers recently signed Tarvernier’s friend, midfielder Conor Newton, from Newcastle.

They have also had Slovenian midfielder Haris Vuckic on loan from St James’ Park this season.
