Huddersfield Town’s joint assistant manager Steve Thompson continues to be strongly linked with the managerial vacancy at League Two outfit Carlisle United.

The 49-year-old former Blackpool coach is currently working alongside Alex Dyer under new Town manager Chris Powell.

Thompson was recruited in the summer to be right-hand man to Mark Robins, who left in the wake of Town’s opening-day defeat by Bournemouth.

He worked with stand-in manager Mark Lillis and first-team coach Steve Eyre to steady the ship in between Robins’ departure and Powell’s arrival.

Robins is being linked with a possible return to management at Blackpool, where Thompson spent nine years before leaving in February.

As a player, Thompson was a midfielder for Bolton Wanderers, Luton Town, Leicester City, Burnley, Rotherham United and Halifax Town.

A key man in Blackpool’s rise from League One to the Premier League, Thompson worked under a number of managers and had two spells as caretaker chief.

Carlisle sacked previous boss Graham Kavanagh earlier this month and are 22nd in League Two after being relegated last season.

Paul Thirlwell and Tony Caig are in caretaker charge, with Bury set to visit Brunton Park on Saturday.

Others linked with the Cumbrian club include former Town player and Celtic coach Willie McStay, the manager of Carlisle-based non-league club Celtic Nation.
