IAN BENNETT says helping Town to a three-point haul is the only thing on his mind as he prepares to reach the 500-match career milestone at home to Oldham tomorrow.

The 39-year-old stopper hopes to return to the starting side after Nick Colgan kept out Carlisle in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy on Tuesday.

It would be an 18th Town appearance to go alongside 89 for Peterborough, 354 for Birmingham, six for Coventry, four for Leeds and 29 for Sheffield United.

“It would be nice to reach the round figure, and I didn’t think I’d get near it when I started out what seems like a long time ago,” said Bennett, who was at QPR and Newcastle, where he played alongside Town boss Lee Clark, before getting his senior break after joining Peterborough in 1991.

“But I’m not really one for looking back. It’s all about the future, and I want to do my bit to ensure it’s bright for Huddersfield Town.”

Bennett, who recently signed a contract extension through to the end of next season, added: “We’ve got a great squad with competition in all areas and we’re in good form.

“Now it’s all about pushing on a match at a time and trying to get to where we all want to be.

“We know Oldham will be tough after they beat us at their place earlier in the season, but we know we can play far better than we did that day.”

Town, who are third in League I, expect to have Arsenal loan striker Benik Afobe available after a knee injury as they chase a fourth successive win.”
